Hospital bag, continued

I should have elaborated more on the part in yesterday's post about the hospital bag. A large part of why it's now packed with my goods is because last Friday after work, I ran to the local Motherhood Maternity store for all of my "hospital essentials". I came away with not one, not two, but FOUR nursing bras, a nursing nightgown, a nursing tank top, and a variety of nursing products designed for a variety of purposes. Now this is all well and good, since a somewhat significant shopping escapade such as this can always be justified by the fact that the purchases can be returned for a full refund within a reasonable amount of time. One would think. That is soooo not the case at Motherhood. The bras and nursing products were considered final sale. Okay, that's fine, I sort of understand. Surely that's the not the case with the clothes. Um, not so much. What you do get is an amazing 10 days to return them...for store credit. Excuse me, what? I can't even return clothes, never worn and price tags intact, for a refund? Yes, oh yes, it turns out this is how it is in the wonderfully monopolized world of maternity stores. They know we need them, and that we're not only at their mercy but completely clueless on post-birth essentials, so they take full advantage. I'd even shopped there prior to this particular experience, but only for the occasional desperate special event top or cheap new pants for work. Never before did their ridulous return policy affect me this way, and why would it, since my being pregnant wasn't necessarily going to change anytime soon? The nursing thing, however? What exactly about their policies affirmed the fact that I would be capable of breastfeeding this child? If for some reason it just doesn't work out, what am I supposed to do, sell breast pads on Craig's List? That's what I want to know, Motherhood, oh queen of all maternity stores. You tell me why you see no reason for me to ever need to return nursing products, and I won't tell all of the future new moms I know to stay as far away from your doors as possible. I'll look forward to your answer within the next 10 days.

  1. Um yeah, I used my nursing bra that I got, maybe 1 or 2 days in the hospital. Bought 2 of them from the GAP. Money well spent. ;-P
